Barton Robert Lieutenant Royal Flying Corps killed in action 12 January, 1916, educated at Glenalmond school and in Germany, employed as a metallurgist in Alabama USA. Enlisted with the 7th Battalion Kings Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, and attached to the RFC. Shot down by Lieutenants Boelks and Immelman piloting Fokker aircraft. Only son of Mr and Mrs Albert Edward Barton of Red Court Carnforth. His cousin was lost with the 'Clan McNaughton' sinking. Source Lancaster Guardian date 19 February, 1916 page 8, photo Code 158 ."

Second lieutenant ROBERT BARTON, Royal Flying Corps, was killed during a reconnaissance over the German lines on January 12th. A message was dropped from a German aeroplane over the British line on January 30th stating that the officer was killed in an air duel with two Fokker machines, and had been buried with military honours at Roubaix, France. He was the onlv son of Mr. Barton, of Red Court, Carnforth, and spoke German fluently."
